It's weird. We live in the age of 24/7 News, where Editors
and Journalists are tearing their hair out in clumps, trying to
fill yet another day's worth of airtime and column inches.
But give them a press release, and chances are they'll scan a few
lines, scrunch it up and file it in that big round metal archive on
the floor.
And all for one reason:
The average press release doesn't contain any
news!!
More often than not, a press release will just be a
flimsy piece of sales copy, with a cheesy headline like:
"ABC Holdings is still the best in class"
Not much of a story there! Editors may be keen to fill slots,
but they won't run a shameless plug for your business.
It's all about making you newsworthy
And that'll be my job. I've been a Journalist and
Features Editor, worked in Press and Radio, and I've been
bombarded with thousands of hideous press releases. Most of
them come from writers who can string a few words together but
haven't grasped the concept of News!
When we talk, I'll get to know your business and draft a whole
series of angles: expertise, human interest, topical tie-ins,
innovation, local impact...then I'll write your release and hand it
over, or bring in a PR specialist to schmooze with their best
contacts in the local and national media.
If your advertising budget is feeling the squeeze, it's
time to grab some free exposure.
So get in touch. I'll get your story out of the bin
- and into the spotlight!
