Marketing for Christmas
It's never too early to get ready for the festive push!
It scares us here at EarthMonkey that people start their Christmas shopping long before their Halloween pumpkins have turned to a nasty putrid goo. But that’s life, and if you’re lining up for a yuletide onslaught, you need to start optimising your website now. The festive clock is ticking…
Here’s our top 5 SEO tips for a happy, happy holiday:
1. Research your keywords
If you’re a Monkey Business regular, you’ll know how much we love Wordtracker. Dive in and see what people are searching for and where you’ll have competition. Or try Google’s keyword tool for extra suggestions. And don’t just look for words like "Christmas". Try "Hanukkah", "gift ideas", "free delivery"…anything that can see a surge in the build-up to December.
Then add in your staple keywords
If you optimise a page for "Christmas" you’ll have buckets of competition and visitors who could be looking for anything from a second-hand santa suit to a humble pair of socks. So create some festive variations by mixing in your usual keywords.
2. Create a special Christmas section
You don’t want to overhaul your generic site and upset your usual rankings, so add a new section where your latest keywords promote your latest offers.
Remember - one page, one keyword
By and large, it’s best to optimise a product page for a single keyword or phrase – unless there are others you can easily work in without diluting the impact of your main choice.
