Long-Tail Keywords

A quick-fix for SEO traumas

Dear EarthMonkey

I’ve tried optimising my website with the names of all my products, but it’s not getting me anywhere. What do you advise?

From: Emma (stationery supplier, Cardiff)

Dear Emma

At the risk of sounding all Marjorie Proops, it’s okay - you’re not alone! It’s all about your choice of keywords and the tools you use to gather the info.

The problem is, if you use "stationery" as a keyword, you’ll have over 45 million competitors on Google – so no matter how well you optimise your page, you’ve really got your work cut out!

That’s one reason why SEO experts are advocating ‘long tail keywords’: when you optimise for a search string that’s 3 or 4 words long, the competition for the chosen phrase is going to be less fierce.

Think of it this way.  SEO is all about fighting the battles you can win.  You won’t compete with 45 million matches for the word ‘stationery’, but you might compete with a handful of matches for "Stationery supplies Cardiff".
