Selling in a downturn
Dear EarthMonkey
I’m selling most of my products online, but with the current recession, my sales are steadily going down. What am I doing wrong?

Dear Steve
It sounds like you’re doing what you’ve always done, and when recession looms we all have to adapt. As consumers batten down the hatches, you need to counter a new set of objections. Do it well and you could even use the new climate to your advantage.
Try a few of these ideas and see what happens to your business:
1. Don’t stop advertising
No, that’s not a desperate plea from an agency that needs its clients to keep spending - it’s just common sense! Even in a recession, people are still buying, even if it’s on a smaller scale. But the first thing your competitors will sacrifice is their marketing budget, so you have the chance to stand alone, projecting an image of success.
What’s more, if you’re buying media space, you should be able to strike a fantastic deal or two. In other words, you can spend less money and increase your visibility all in one. That’s common sense!
