Clients are always asking how
I go about SEO. So I've primed this page for "SEO Copywriter
Cardiff" - just
for illustration…
First off, think of the phrase: "SEO Copywriter Cardiff" - it's
hardly grammatical, but it's typical of the
way we all phrase our searches online.
So the SEO Copywriter's mission is to work the phrase into the text and make it sound more natural. And that can be quite a challenge!
Optimising for "SEO Copywriter" (not forgetting
"Cardiff")
A few years ago, Copywriters got away with endless
repetition (Looking for an SEO Copywriter in Cardiff? We're the
best SEO Copywriters" and so on!)
It was all done in the name of 'Keyword Density'...but today, density has curled up its SEO toes, and the search engines want you to mix the phrase up a little.
That means using variations and adding contextual keywords -
like so:
- SEO Copywriter working in Cardiff
- Cardiff SEO Copywriting
- Writing copy for search engines
- Cardiff-based Copywriter
- Search Engine Copywriter in South Wales
- Cardiff Copywriter
- And so on…
Placing the text for SEO
It's hugely important to place the text in key places around the
page. In this example you can see:
1. The URL includes
search-engine-optimisation/seo-copywriter-cardiff
2. "SEO Copywriter" pops up in the headers, sub-headers,
menu and browser. (So does "Cardiff")
3. The whole phrase is repeated in the body copy, but not too much
- that feels like spamming! Instead the words "SEO",
"Copywriter" and "Cardiff" pop up here and there, sometimes
together, sometimes apart - so the whole thing feels more
natural.
4. The image is labelled with an alt tag that reads "James Daniel
- SEO Copywriter, Cardiff (UK)"
5. The keywords crop up again in the footer - always a great place
to clarify your regional location or coverage.
And speaking of regional keywords...
Don't go mad when it comes to name-dropping your local town or
city. If "Cardiff" pops up in every paragraph, it would be a
nightmare for the reader, and the search bots would hate it
too.
Far better to focus your message on the core product or service, and refer to your region here and there, just to add some context.
Does PageRank matter?
Yes it does! Google etc need to know that you're a trusted source
as well as a relevant keyword match. So quality backlinks will
always sway the odds in your favour - especially if your target
keywords are used in the anchor text that carries the link.
And that's the whistle-stop version
Of course there's a lot more to SEO: there's still meta
content, distribution, PR, keyword monitoring…and we've hardly
touched on conversion: how to make sure your visitors stick around
and take some kind of action.
But I'll tell you all about that as soon as you get in touch.
For now there's one last thing
Search robots look in the most obvious places first, so it helps
if your very last paragraph contains some valuable keywords. Then
you'll be primed and ready for action:
That's what I've done here. Because you never know when someone will type "Find SEO Copywriter in Cardiff"…:)
